Our Philosophy
OUR PHILOSOPHY
The Association believes that participation in team sports can be an important ingredient in healthy youth maturation . Our programs are designed to generate self-esteem and good sportsmanship through skills development in a positive social environment . Above all, we try to assure that youth hockey is fun! Our programs are open to all Pelham youth. The Club’s programs stress the development of skills and teamwork that will create a solid foundation for any hockey player and will enable them to excel at the varsity level.
Youth hockey is about kids, and we take what appears to be a unique position when it comes to youth hockey.
- Firstly , our teams are comprised mostly of Pelham youth; however, we invite kids from out of town to tryout for our teams.
- Secondly , we understand that winning is important, and everyone from our coaches to the players and parents wants to win every game. But we also try to remember that winning a game is not the ultimate goal of youth sports or this organization, but a means to an end. That end is the development of each and every player’s character, his sense of sportsmanship, his skill level, and overall love and passion for the game.
- To accomplish this end, we emphasize teamwork, respect for players, coaches, and officials, and having fun.
As a nonprofit, volunteer organization, Pelham Hockey is totally dependent on the commitment of parents and volunteers to fill all coaching and administrative positions. Pelham Hockey also relies heavily on the generosity and support of parents and fundraisers to keep our programs affordable to all. To the extent possible, the Association provides financial assistance to eager participants who would otherwise be excluded. The essence of this philosophy is reviewed and reaffirmed each year by the Board. In this regard the comments and suggestions of players and parents are always welcome.
THE CLINIC PROGRAM
The Pelham Clinic Program continues to be the backbone of PYHA. The youngsters have been introduced to the basic skills of skating, shooting, and stick handling. The goal of this program is to better prepare players for the Travel leagues and to provide them with years of FUN.
